NONE LIKE HIM: GOD THE FATHER
There are many attributes of God that we cannot fully comprehend. Another attribute of God is how He exists as the trinity. We worship one God who exists in three separate persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Although we can try to explain it, we cannot fully comprehend how God exists within the trinity. However, we can begin to understand each person of the Trinity and have a relationship with Him.
When we look at the trinity it is natural to look at God the Father first. Throughout the Jesus’ life he prays to God the Father and talks about doing the will of his father. In Acts 17:24-29, we learn that God is over everything and that we are His offspring. The concept of a father is something that we clearly understand in our daily life. We all have a father. You father might not be your biological father. You might have a great relationship with your father, or you might have a very poor relationship with your father. Regardless of who your father is or what kind of relationship you have with your father, we all can comprehend what a father is.
When we begin to examine God the Father there are three key things that stand out. First, God is the father of all creation. James 1:17 shows that all good things come from the “Father of lights.” God loves His creation, and He desires to redeem it and make it whole again with Him once more. Secondly, God is the father of Jesus. In Matthew 3:17 God the Father speaks over Jesus as He is being baptized in the Jordan River and states, “this is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we all know, John 3:16 teaches us that God loved us so much that He gave is only son, Jesus. Lastly, God is the father of the church. 1 John 3:1 teaches that we, the church, are God’s children. Paul teaches us that we have been adopted into the family of Abraham and are heirs with Christ.
Whether we have a great father or flawed father here on earth, our father in heaven is beyond anything we could imagine. He loves us so much that He sacrificed His son for us. It is because of the love of our righteous father that we have a hope for salvation and redemption. It is the love of our father that should pull us towards Him in worship.
Reflective Questions:
1. How have you seen the father’s love displayed in your own life?
2. What does it mean to have a father in heaven like God the Father?
3. How can we honor God the Father in our daily lives?
